GERMAN LITERARY ROUTE

DAY 1 MADRID – BERLIN

Arrival to the airport of Berlin and transfer to the hotel. In case of sufficient time, we will take a panoramic tour of the city of Berlin. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 2 BERLIN

Breakfast. Departure to visit Berlin all day. Among others, we will visit the Pergamon Museum and later we will stop for lunch in the former house of Bertolt Brecht, now converted into a restaurant, the Kellerestaurant, where they still conserve much of the author’s equipment. Later, we will take a tour of the city, stopping in the Deutsches Theater and in the Berliner Ensemble, mythical theaters where the autor developed his life as a dramaturg and actor. We will also include Bebel Square, where they burned the books of Thomas Mann and other authors during the Hitler regime. To remember it, there is a monument fo some empty shelves enclosed in the ground, and next to it there is a plaque with a sentence by Heinrich Heine that says “Where they burn book, they end up buring the town”. Transfer to the hotel, dinner and lodging.

DAY 3 BERLIN – POTSDAM – SANSSOUCI PALACE – BERLIN

Breakfast and departure for Potsdam, residence of the royal Prussian family. The majestic buildings of the royal residences were constructed principally during the reign of Frederick the Great. One of these is Sanssouci Palace (French: «without worries»), by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, 1744, famous for its formal gardens and rococo interiors. Lunch and return to Berlin, where we will visit new Berlin, including Central Station, the Sony Center or the dome of the Reichstag. Transfer to the hotel, Dinner and lodging.

DAY 4 BERLIN – ROSTOCK – LÜBECK – HAMBURG

Breakfast and departure for Rostock, where we will visit its famous university, where they awarded Albert Einstein the doctorate “honoris causa”, as well as the preserved part its wall and medieval towers. Continuation to Lübeck, with Lunch, city tour and tour of the House of Gunter Grass, where the permanent exhibition shows artistic paintings by the winner of the Noble Prize for literature and the close relationship between his literary and artisitic production. In temporary exhibitions they also present the work of Grass in the literary environment, his talents in the plastic arts, music and others. This house has a garden with sculptures by Grass, archive, library, a store and a café. It also includes the Buddenbrook House. This literary house with five floors, offers the visitors as special encounter with literature. The two exhibitions “the Buddenbrook House – a century of the novel” and “The Manns – a family of writers” are complemented by temporary exhibitions and special events. Continuation to Hamburg, Dinner and lodging.

DAY 5 HAMBURG – BREMEN – HAMELIN – COLOGNE

Breakfast. Short panoramic tour of the city of Hamburg and departure for Bremen and Hamelin, cities on the Fairy Tale Route. Lunch and continuation to Cologne. Transfer to the hotel, Dinner and lodging.

DAY 6 COLOGNE – FRANKFURT

Breakfast and complete tour of the city of Cologne, including the Cathedral, the Roman-Germanic Museum and the streets where the Nobel Prize Winner Heinrich Böll grew up. Lunch and Rhine river cruise, and at the stipulated time, continuation to Frankfurt, dinner and lodging.

DAY 7 FRANKFURT – ROTHENBORG – FRANKFURT

Breakfast and panoramic tour of the city of Goethe, where we will be able to visit his birth house. In addition, we will visit places like the Grüneburgpark (“Park of the Green Castle”), the largest park in the city, the Palmergartn (“Palmtree Garden”) or the Main Tower, from whose terrace situated at 200 m we can enjoy a magnificent view. Lunch and departure for Rothenborg, world famous tourist attraction for its well preserved medieval center. At the agreed upon time, return to Frankfurt, transfer to the hotel, Dinner and lodging.

DAY 8 FRANKFURT – TÜBINGEN – MUNICH

Breakfast and departure for Tübingen, where Herman Hesse lived his adolescence, and where he wrote his first poems while he worked in the Heckenhauer Bookstore. Lunch and Continuation to Munich. Transfer to the hotel, Dinner and lodging.

DAY 9 MUNICH

Breakfast and complete tour of Munich, where we will visit the city including the Neighborhood of Schwabing, reference to cultural transgresssion. There is no book about Schwabing that does not associate it with the spirit of innovation and madness that impregnated people like Thomas Mann or Bertold Brecht, writers, musicians and painters who were attrated by the air that was breathed in the area. Lunch and tour of the most emblematic monuments of the city, the baroque church with two towers of the Monastery Theatiner (Theatinerkloster) near the Feldherrnhalle; the Maximilianeum, today Seat of the Bavarian Parliament and situated on the bank of the Isar River, etc. Dinner in Hofbräuhaus, one of the most emblematic breweries of the city. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 10 MUNICH –NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE – AIRPORT OF MUNICH- MADRID

Breakfast and departure for Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most famous neoGothic castles. Contructed on orders from Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1866, originally it was known as the new Hohenschwangau, in honor of the place where the  King spent a large part of his youth. Its name was changed after the death of the king. It is the most photographed building in Germany and is one of the most popular tourist destination in that country. Lunch and departure for the Airport of Munich to leave on a flight to Madrid. END OF TRIP
