Basque Country: Middle Ages and Tradition

DAY 1 PLACE OF ORIGIN – MADRID Departure from our point of origin on a regular flight bound for Madrid. Arrival in Barcelona and meeting with the attendant. Transfer to the hotel. Orientation meeting and free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 2 MADRID Breakfast. Guided panoramic tour through the city of Madrid, capital of Spain since Philip II selected it in the 16th century. During the visit we will see the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Oriente, location of the Royal Palace, The Cathedral, the Church of San Franciso the Grande, the Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, Street and Puerta de Alcalá, Paseo de the Castellana, Paseo of the Prado, Retiro Park, Plaza de España, Columbus Square, Bullring, Plaza de Cibeles, Neptune, etc. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 3 MADRID Breakfast. We will visit the Prado Museum, the art gallery of Madrid that holds the most comprehensive collection of Spanish painting from the 11th to the 18th centuries, and many of the masterworks of the greatest painters of universal importance, like El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Bosch, Tiziano, Van Dyck or Rembrandt. Then, we will visit Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, which belongs to the Real Madrid Football Club. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 4 MADRID – LOGRONO – PAMPLONA Breakfast. Departure at the designated time for Logroño where we will have time to visit the Cathedral. Tour of a Rioja Alavesa winery. Continuation to Pamplona. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 5PAMPLONA – EXCURSION TO SANGÜESA, YESA AND LEYRE Breakfast. In the morning, we will visit this city know worldwide for the bullfighting that is celebrated annually, the Festival of San Fermín. We will continue on to Sangüesa, which shines due to its historic-artistic heritage of medieval origin. In The Middle Ages, Sangüesa lived a great splendor thanks to, among other things, the fact that it was an important stop for the pilgrims who were traveling on St. James’ Way. Continuation to Yesa, where we will find the imposing monastery that had its heyday in the 11th and 12th centuries, the Monastery of Leyre. Return to Pamplona. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 6 PAMPLONA – BIARRITZ – SAINT SEBASTIAN Breakfast. Departure for Biarritz, to stroll through what is without a doubt the tourist destination par excellence in the Basque Country, and, to tell the truth, it is not without reason: the Rock of the Virgin, the Old Port, the Museum of the Sea, the Fishermen’s Port, the Rough Rock, the Grande Plage, the Hôtel Du Palais, Clemenceau Square, the Casino, castles and palacesEverything is beauty, glamour and luxury in Biarritz. Continuation to San Sebastián, Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 7 SAN SEBASTIÁN – EXCURSION TO ZARAUTZ AND ZUMAIA Breakfast. We will visit the city in which we will see the famous Concha Promenade bordering the bay of the same name to arrive to Ondarreta Beach. We will continue the city tour traveling through the Cathedral or Church of the Good Shepherd, in historicist neoclassical style. Finally we will go to the Old Part where we will see The Virgin of the Choir Church, patron saint of the city, The Romanesque Church of Saint Vincent. Lunch based on Pintxos. In the afternoon Excursion to We will continue a Zumaia, situated in a privileged location on the Guipuzcoan coast, on the banks of the sea and of the bay at the confluence of the Urola and Narrondo Rivers. Its origin is an ancient monastery: In the Middle Ages the inhabitants, dispersed throughout the Sehatz Valley and fed up with suffering constant pirate attacks and pillaging, fortified an urban nucleus. Hence the church preserves its defensive poise. Once inside the urban center we find the Basque Gothic Church of Saint Peter. Last we will visit ZarautzThis Guipuzcoan locale combines a splendid beach with an intersting historic center. Its gastronomy is one of the most exquisite and famous of the entire Basque Country. It is home to a tranquil maritime promenade, on the edge of the Cantabrian Sea, adorned with numerous vanguard sculptures. Its waves make Zarautz into a paradise for surfing lovers. Its town center holds important surprises in store for the vistor such as the Gothic Luzea Tower, the Medieval Church of Royal Saint Mary and the Renaissance Narros Palace. Return to San Sebastian. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 8 SAN SEBASTIAN – LEKEITIO – ORDIZIA – BILBAO Breakfast. Departure for Lekeito, which brings together Gothic jewels, a marine hamlet and ample beaches. In Ordizia whose old town is replete with interesting buildings (palaces, houses, tower…). Transfer to Bilbao. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 9 BILBAO Breakfast. Morning tour of Bilbao. We will discover the intense urban life in the center of the Vizcayan capital, its old town “the seven streets” and its environments, which make up the principal area of day and nighttime entertainment, with narrow streets and houses with very well kept balconies, counterpoint to the financial and industrial environmnet, we will stroll through Arenal, through the New Square or Unamuno Square. We will visit the famous Guggenheim Museum of Contemporary Art, work of the American architect Frank Gehry who represents a magnificent example of the most avant guarde architecture of the 20th century. Afternoon free, Return to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 10 BILBAO – PLACE OF ORIGIN Breakfast. Transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to our point of origin. End of services.
