Saint James’ Way II

DAY 1 PLACE OF ORIGIN – MADRID Departure from our point of origin on a regular flight bound for Madrid. Arrival in Barcelona and meeting with the attendant. Transfer to the hotel. Orientation meeting and free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 2 MADRID Breakfast. Guided panoramic tour through the city of Madrid, capital of Spain since Philip II selected it in the 16th century. During the visit we will see the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Oriente, location of the Royal Palace, The Cathedral, the Church of San Franciso the Grande, the Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, Street and Puerta de Alcalá, Paseo de the Castellana, Paseo of the Prado, Retiro Park, Plaza de España, Columbus Square, Bullring, Plaza de Cibeles, Neptune, etc. Then we will visit the Prado Museum. Then, we will visit Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, which belongs to the Real Madrid Football Club. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 3 MADRID – EXCURSION TO TOLEDO Breakfast and departure for Toledo, known as the city of three cultures, for having been inhabited for centuries by Christians, Jews and Muslims, as well as “The Imperial city,” for having been the principal seat of the court of Charles I of Spain. Panoramic tour of the city where we will contemplate the Cathedral, which we will visit, the Alcázar, the Synagogue of the Tránsito, and the Church of Santo Tomé, which we will also visit. Return to Madrid. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 4 MADRID – EXCURSION TO ÁVILA, SEGOVIA AND LA GRANJA Breakfast. Full day excursion. Departure for the city of Ávila, city with a medieval appearance, surrounded by walls from the 11th century. Panoramic tour of the city, birthplace of Saint Teresa, where we can admire the Convent of the Incarnation, the Romanesque Cathedral, houses and palaces built in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, etc. We continue a Segovia, known throughout the world for the 16 km long aqueduct The Roman Empire left behind. Selected as residence for several kings of Castile, it conserves one of the most notable medieval ensembles in Spain. Its Cathedral, considered because of its elegance as “The Lady of the Spanish Cathedrals,” and the Alcázar, the most spectacular castle in the country, are prominent. Continuation to La Farm. Tour of the Royal Palace. Philip V retired to this place in 1724 and in the ensuing twenty years he enlarged the gardens and the palace, which was used as a summer residence by his successors until Alfonso XIII. Of great interest are the frescoed vaults, the paintings and the furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries. Return to Madrid. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 5 MADRID – SANTO DOMINGO DE SILOS – BURGOS Breakfast. At the designated time, Departure in coach for Santo Domingo de Silos to visit the Monastery. It is a Benedictine abbey located in the eastern part of a small valley, in the province of Burgos that had its origins in the 12th century in honor of its Abbot Domingo, who died in 1073. Fifteen years after his death they constructed a temple similar to that of Saint Peter of Arlanza, which was replaced by the current Neoclassical style (1751-1792), work of Pedro Machuca, based on plans by Ventura Rodríguez. In the Visigothic era there was already a monastery dedicated to Saint Sebastian, which was legally connected to the noble family. After the visit we will continueon to Burgos. In the afternoon we will tour the Cathedral, one of the most beautiful monuments of Gothic art and worthy of the designation of World Heritage Site (1984). But more than a monument, the Cathedral is a living temple, dedicated to worship and prayer, which throughout history has taken on the artistic movements of every period, in order to dignify and solemnize ceremonies, praise of God and Christian life. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 6 BURGOS – CARRION DE LOS CONDES – SAHAGUN – LEON Breakfast. Departure for Carrión traveling through Frómista and Town lcázar de Sirga. Arrival to Carrión, center on St. James’ Way. Visit to the Church of Saint Mary of the Way, the Church of Saint James, and the Monastery of Saint Zoilo. Continuation to Sahagún, one of the most prosperous and boisterous towns on the Way. Departure for León, an obligatory stop on St. James’ Way. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 7 LEON – ASTORGA – LUGO Breakfast and tour of the Gothic Cathedral. We will contemplate the Collegiate Church, the Convent de San Marcos, etc. Continuation to Astorga. Brief stop to see the Shrine to the Virgin of the Way. Arrival toAstorga and Tour of the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace, de Gaudí. Continuation to Lugo. Tour featuring the 2266 meter long wall that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000. It is the only Roman fortification in the world today that conserves intact the entire perimeter, and it surrounds the city center, the Cathedral, the provincial museum, the city hall and other buildings of interest. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 8 LUGO – ARZUA – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA Breakfast. Transfer to the city of Arzúa, and from there we will walk St. James’ Way on foot to arrive in Santiago de Compostela where afterward we will retrieve the Compostelana, pilgrimage credential attesting to having done the Way. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 9 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA Breakfast and full day panoramic tour with lunch of the city. Santiago de Compostela is one of the most indisputable patrimonial assets of humanity. This city, due to its monumental integrity, unites specific and universal values in an ideal city that overflows History and timelessness at the same time. We will visit the Obradoiro Square, its famous Cathedral and the Portico of Glory, the Old Neighborhood, etc. Return to the hotel. Afternoon free. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 10 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – EXCURSION TO RIAS BAIXAS Breakfast. Tour of the Lower Rías, who unfold their enchantments in blue and green, the colors of a sea that enters into the land. Beaches, islands, vineyards, paths, manor houses, churches, sea food, etc. Landscapes with history, small fishing town ges and cities to enjoy full of charm. Return to the hotel. Free time. Dinner and lodging.

DAY 11 SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – PLACE OF ORIGIN Breakfast. Transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to our point of origin. End of services.
